New wine…old bottle
Like the B-52 bomber, Renault's Magnum has been around a long time yet remains a force to be reckoned with. And, after 15 years, the truck's quirky, modular flat-floor cabin is still unique.
There have been many imitators but there's only one Magnum and now, thanks to a new engine and gearbox transplant, it has a fresh lease of life. The old Mack E-Tech engine has been replaced by a shiny, red-topped, straight-six 12-litre lump called DXi, tuned to either 440 or 480hp. Behind it sits a regular 16-speed EcoSplit synchro stirrer with the choice of a new Optidriver II auto transmission.
Cab, chassis, suspension, brakes and axles have all been given a major makeover and, after an interminable wait, UK operators can finally specify the Multipass cab interior on a right-hooker. There are no prizes for guessing where the New Magnum's driveline comes from, though.
