Ever wondered how your employer would react if you were left paralysed after an accident? Stephen Davison needn't have worried about his boss, Jim Lawson. Nick Garlick meets 'em both in Cumbria

Lawsons of Cockermouth have just put a unique new DAF XF on the road.

For the background to this vehicle we need to go back to 1994 and Stephen Davison's accident - the Lawsons Scania he was driving rolled over, leaving him paralysed from the chest down. Following a year in hospital recovering from his horrific injuries, Stephen was anxious to get back behind the wheel and not spend the rest of his life merely surviving on benefit.

Jim Lawson obliged, offering his friend light duties when he felt up to it. Working in the transport office allowed Stephen to be a part of the company and 'one of the lads' again, but it didn't end there - his boss had a DAF converted for him. Meeting the people involved in the project was to experience a real sense of family and comradeship.
